With your help, we can make Canada a nation where all youth have an equal opportunity to graduate from high school and build the foundation for their future success.
There are so many ways that you can help to build a Graduation Nation!
Volunteer
We need your help to make Canada a Graduation Nation!
Volunteers play an essential role at Pathways to Education and much of our success is directly attributed to over 1200 volunteers who work tirelessly in our tutoring and mentoring programs across the country.
As Pathways to Education grows, so does our need for volunteers. We continue to recruit people from all sectors to support the delivery of our programs. We offer excellent opportunities, training and support. Join the dedicated team of Pathways volunteers and you will see how your time contribution will make a difference in the lives of Canada’s youth.
Who are Pathways to Education volunteers?
We look for people who demonstrate passion for their role, dedication and commitment to our students. Above all, our volunteers must:
- Be serious about their volunteer commitment
- Have enough time to commit themselves for at least two hours per week on a regular basis for a minimum of one school year
- Be patient, respectful and act within the boundaries outlined in their role description
- Enjoy teaching, explaining school subjects
- Have energy and enthusiasm
- Possess a desire to make a difference in someone’s life!
Types of Volunteer Opportunities
Tutors
Generally, Pathways tutors commit to one evening or afternoon per week to tutor students in small groups or one-on-one. We need tutors to help students who have a range of abilities in high school subjects. Tutors specialize in at least one subject (math, sciences, English, French, social sciences, or literacy).
Group mentors
Pathways mentors provide social and emotional support through group activities, discussions and projects. Two or three mentors work together to lead a group of approximately 15 students every other week during the school year.
Teen Literacy Volunteer Tutors
These tutors work with students in a one-to-one capacity focusing on reading, spelling and writing.
Volunteer Requirements and Process
The requirements and process to become a volunteer do vary by community. In general, you should be prepared to:
- Attend a volunteer information session
- Complete the volunteer intake package
- Complete an interview
- Pass a vulnerable sector criminal background check
- Provide references
- Attend the mandatory training sessions required for the position applied
